...our Cousins from Australia and New Zealand not being able to log on? It is really starting to **** me off. I know that this site is here basically for the benefit of a commercial enterprise and that our Cousins Down Unders probably are unable to participate in that venture but..........

Just to make us, the buying public happy, one might think that they would either give an explanation or attempt to remedy the problem.

We love our Cousins. We are alone in this nasty world without them. GET THEM ON LINE!!!!!

Behind you 110% Boom.....us Brits may have sent them overseas many years ago but we'd still like to be able to talk with them here in dockside.

Even better: we'd like to be able to participate in the business venture that is iboats.

Hope our cousins get online permanently sooner rather than later.

Here's what I read several days ago.

The reason? Unfortunately, your networks are also shared with China and their neighbors. When we open ourselves up to them our servers just get completely bombarded with hacker attacks and denial of service attacks. That's the price you pay when you get big enough. Since we get very little business from your area of the world we had to make the decision to just block the networks and lose the sales. That is less painful that be bombarded with attacks 24 hours a day. We would love to open up completely to our friends down under but our hands are tied. We are not happy about it either! If anyone can give us a good work around solution we are all ears. Thanks and we hope you can somehow get through!

But - these days, blocking can be executed with pinpoint precision. With my little ol' pent4 win xp I can block individual addresses - even proxy addresses, even anonymous proxy addresses - imagine what you could do when someone with computer skills gets behind the wheel.

I. for one, have tried to purchase from iboats, I was denied because 'we don't sell international'.

Hundreds if not thousands of legitimate businesses trade internationally over the net every day, come on iboats, your the biggest online marine chandlery in the world - step up to the plate.

Give us the opportunity and we will buy.

Re: Why is Admin mute re....

I too have wanted to buy from uboats on 3 occasions.
The 1st was a large item. I went to Qantas, they gave me a firm price, told me to have seller ship it to X address in USA, and they would have it on my door in 10 work days max. All to simple.
The last was a Navman 5600.
What is wrong with my credit card?
I keep one just for such transactions. It has stupidly low level. You tell me the price, I put the money in the Card, tell you to process transaction....everything is sweet.... post me the item.
Here is why we buy internationally.
For my Truck I have been quoted here in Aussie US$495 for molding. Truck Business in your country have quoted me US$165. That is $US$330 savings before freight and GSTax, and that is minimal. Rang the guy and talked to him. No problem, posted me their catologue, just ring him with the order, he will come back with frieght quote....bingo.
Tell you, if an American rang me, paid for 2 pallets of herbs, and wanted them in XX city by xx date, I'd be out there with a torch tied to my nut picking and packing.....no worries mate.
Anyway, I thoroughly enjoy uboats forums. Thank you for the opportunity to participate.
Cheers
Phillip

That's not a real good answer. Of course the networks are being shared with China. They're also being shared with Canada, Denmark, Germany, Italy, and Southbumf**K, Egypt. That's why they call it the World Wide Web.

I don't think their hands are tied, they're just taking the easy way out. Maybe iboats should get in touch with ebay. They seem to be able to manage.

Re: Why is Admin mute re....

Hmm... I tend to disagree with you guys on this. I think iboats is doing the right thing here. Our mail servers were getting POUNDED with SPAM until we blocked messages originating from Asian IP's.

iboats has a decision to make, if they are getting hit with DOS attacks and they are mostly originating from that area of the world, they have a responsibility to the well being of their business and the employees to block them from potential harm.

The Denial of Service attacks can potentially mess up EVERYONE's access to iboats. Yeah, I can say this while sitting in the US of A but regardless it is a wise business move, and IMO you cannot fault them for it.

And BTW; this is just a wild guess but I'm willing to wager that ebay has a little larger system than iboats has... as well as a little larger bank account.

Are they taking the easy way out? Yes... of course. But they are also taking the most cost-effective and SMARTEST way out.

I agree with ee. Its a business descion that they had to make. If the cost of blocking spamming and other attacks from those IPs is potentialy more costly than the potential revenue gain from that part of the world........then its an easy business decision.

I agree also, but maybe they can work in a few exceptions in those filters in time.

Can you say "Firewall". I used to work for Network Associates that makes Virus/Firewall protection. Maybe IBoats needs to invest in some needed protection against DOS attacks from the gateway.

I can't disagree with you eeboater. The decision is the correct one for their business, if this is the solution
What I always wonder is, why is it only iboats.com that have to take these measures.
In all my time on the internet, iboats is the only site that has had to take this type of action. Seems pretty strange.
Cheers
Phillip

Re: Why is Admin mute re....

Maybe we should do some friendly routing for our over seas friends....

Make a VPN tunnel for them to go through to get to iboats?

If someone can help me with the config, I've got a cisco 2600 router and a good enough dsl line to do the bounce.
