Ya know L.A. and California get a ration of crapola here and elsewhere. I have from time to time posted little bits 'o defensive information, but this otta just about settle it. I took this picture today a block from my house, a little bit better frame. It was low 60's, brrrrr and, well you can see. Last week we had about three days above 80, this collected Saturday night and Sunday morning. The big one on the left tops out at 10,080 ft, skiing 45 minutes away. We went to the beach the weekend prior, 45 minutes the other way. We were in shorts, but I had to wear a t-shirt. Winter sucks :p :p :D

Great shot QC! I guess I never realized how many mountains were near LA. I've been there before, but it's been many years ago. I love the rolling foothills in the background. Is there anything on the other side development wise or is it open range all the way to the mountains?

Re: Why I love Los Angeles

DR,

It is only lightly populated, prolly only 1.5 million in that little swath . . . :p :p I'm pretty sure that I am underestimating because we cram 18 million around here somewhere. That's the other side of that coin . . .

We call the area between those hills (Chino Hills) and Mt. San Antonio (AKA Mt. Baldy, Ole Baldy, Baldy) the San Gabriel Valley. It is pretty large, from those hills to the base of the mountain is about 8 miles. I probably had the lens pretty close to 50MM equivalent, so the depth perception in the picture is very close to actual. Note that the valley floor is only 650 ft. and again, Baldy is over 10, so it just jumps up from there. We can get that view from offshore in a boat

QC, that sure is a different view of L.A. to what we are normally shown. Great photo.

California's a beautiful place. I look forward to going back there next month. :)

Beautiful view wish it was in my backyard (which is now a desert) but the problem with your view is EARTHQUAKES . I can tollerate a tornado every once in a while, but the thought of falling off in the ocean without my boat dont appeal to me. ;) :D

Ya QC that would be a great place to live, if it wasn’t for the hordes that already occupy the joint and the outrageous cost of living. :p :p All joking aside, my time spent (be it limited) in your little corner of the country was quite pleasurable, apart from traffic. It seems to me the weather pattern has a lot to do with your views, if my memories correct.

Yeah but QC, how many days a year can you actually see those mountains, hmmmmm? I spent 14 years in Pasadena. There was not much more beautiful, except of course you when you could not see much past the next stop light. :(

Yeah, we've heard that before, but us Californians would rather "Shake an' bake" than "Twist and shout." :D

Absolutely WONDEROUS.

But, you didn't mention.

1. Average freeway speed is-20 MPH-@2:00 AM. ;) 2-MPH at 8:00 AM.

2. Nobody but YOU, speaks english.

3. Nuts, nuts, nuts, (cereal bowl) everywhere.

Arizona is almost full of CA residents "bailing/cashing in".

Come on over, I can get you the same view at, half the price-for now- and you can drive on new freeways that actually move. ;)

Plus, for now, you need only TWO languages-Spanish/English.

You can forget: Tiawanese, Chinese, Korean, Manderin, Portuguese, Japanese and "surfer".

Don't you feel better already? :D

Re: Why I love Los Angeles

Boomer,

It is amazing how much better the air is over the last 10 years. I can see the mountains most days, even in summer. I hate to admit it, but the smog police have helped . . .

DJ and LT,

Yes, traffic is still a huge deal. Not like Techno noted, as the 45 minute deal is basically any weekend and most days between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. You definitely need to know alternate routes and the timing . . .

To be fair, I have worked out of a home office for the last 10 years and don't commute, so I am not as affected as others. The traffic has gotten worse during that period, and it sucked when I did commute.

Last year, that snowy view lasted most of winter, but that was an exceptionally wet winter for us. I have been waiting to take that one this year, which has been very dry. The fact is that there are only a couple of places on earth that have skiing so close to the Ocean AND in a Mediterranean climate. Cost of living is always relative, higher this, lower that and wages that correspond. If not, people leave, we're still raking them in as far as I can tell ;) The exception in SoCal is housing, if you're already in, you be happy, if your not, well, your still not . . .
