Kickers are generally mounted as back-up or trolling motors, in addition to the main motor. I don't know where the expession originated...Kinda like a boost I guess...

It is a very old term. Back when I was a kid, 70+ years ago, all outboards were called kickers. Of course all were small then. Why? I dunno.

As Art says small motors let you kick the oars out. Chief Chief

I usually refer to the trolling / backup/auxilliary motor as a kicker. But, I've also heard almost any outboard referred to as a kicker e.g. "I've got a 18 ft. jon boat with a 50 hp kicker."

Not so fast, there Chief! Keep those oars handy, especially if you're running a little old outboard or one of the wierd off-brand ones. I found myself pulling them out the other day to get back to the dock.

I had never heard the term kicker until I came onto iboats, in my part of the world they are refered to as auxiliaries, the law here states with an aux motor you don't require oars in your boat.

I always thought it was simply because you "kick" something to get it moving.
