why do large boats always spit out water?

Just a question, I was in Fort Lauderdale last week, and crusing around the Intercoastal, I passed many large mega yachts parked, and was surprised that they constantly were spitting out water (out the side small holes near the water line). What is that? Are these boats taking in that kind of water, and that is the bilge pump working?

Thanks.

MAX

Some of the time you may be seeing some of the above, but if a lot of water is coming out then you are probably seeing anti-roll tanks or bilge keels in action. The rolling motion on boats is not all that desirable and thus engineers have developed several ways of working around this. Other methods are to use flopper-stoppers and roll damping fins.

Here is an article that will explain the anti-roll tanks:
http://jvc.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/9/7/839

Many of the mega yatch have electrical generator onboard. This generator are water cooled and what you are seeing are the warm water discharge.

Yep.. Gensets and A/C's..

Them mega yachts are high maintenance machines all around.. If you don't run the A/C, headliners start to fall, the boat starts to smell of mildew, ect... Inside can get very hot...

Even when they are hauled out and dry-docked for service, there is usually a cooling tower piping in water for running the A/C systems...

I don't know about mega yachts but I asked a man whos family owns a few large fishing vessels (each around 90 feet long) and he said most of the water coming out both sides of their hulls
was due to systems for balancing the vessels.

A boat is never parked unless it is on a trailer, when tied up , it is said to be "docked" .

Or auto bilge pumping out any water that finds its way into the bilge, through rain, condensation or anything else. The marina I,m in has nothing larger than 35 feet, seems someone boat is always "pissing" out water. not too many have gensets or a/c.

Jim

Yep, Uncs. 60' Hatteras spits out a constant flow from the heat exchanger for the climate control and the genset if it's running.

Any or all of the above, except not likely to be sewage if anywhere near peopled areas, not that it couldn't be, just the chance of getting a citation.
