Why did Johnson come out with the Javelin? Just curious... or was that just a name someone decided it sounded good?

OMC experimented with names that sounded fierce and aggressive in the notion that it would help sales. . . sorta like cars.

I don't think it affected sales.

I believe they first used the name Javelin in 1957, back in the days of big tail fins on cars.

I just thought because it said Javelin Seahorse, it meant that it was built for salt water use too. I'm a dummy...

"Javelin Freshwater Use Only" wouldn't fit on the cowling :D

They used the Javelin name in '56 also. Looked very similar to the Seahorse except it had a chrome, hinged cover over the recess where the high/low jets and choke were.

Re: Why did Johnson....

The Javelin name was used on the 1956 30hp "deluxe" model, as well as 1957s 35hp "deluxe" model. Added chrome trim and different color schemes to give it a distinct look. Also, all of the '50s Javelins were electric start models.

They ressurected the moniker in the late1970s/early 1980s for use on a dressed up version of the V4 85 or 100hp model (depending on year). The motor itself was the same except for the graphics.

- Scott
