Why can't mechanics fix my Yammie 115 2s?

My 2001 Saltwater Series has been cutting out at idle and low revs for around 12 months. Doesn't worry me too much as it restarts reasonably quickly but my passengers get spooked, particularly when we are on blue water with no land in sight - so time to get serious!

In this time it's had four visits to three separate mechanics and none of them have fixed the problem. The last visit last week to the so-called Yamaha specialist in the nearby town (150km round trip) and when I was checking it in I told him to look inside the carbies as this was the likely problem. When I picked it up he assured me he had fixed the problem by "turning the mixture screw". I'm sure the other guys did this. Big test run on the weekend and same problem but probably more cut outs - I assume the screw has now come full circle.

It's going back to the "specialist" on Friday. Is there a simple test these guys should be running to see if they really have fixed the problem? What do I ask them to look at in technical terms. I don't have many options to take the work elsewhere. Please help!

4 years old and how many hours? have your fuel pumps ever been kitted? did any of them do a fuel system vacuum test?

300 hours. No kits/tests of that sort that they've told me about. I'm assuming they have taken the easy road of ramping up the mixture.

tell them to rebuild or replace the fuel pump and rebuild the carbs. the air/fuel ratio is fixed on the carbs by idle air and idle fuel jets. all the mixture screws do is allow more or less of the ratio in. most likly the iddle fuel jets are partially blocked. sounds like the techs arent checking much.

Got the boat back last night. They reckon they found "lots of bits in the carbies" (they finally checked!). They also checked fuel lines. Now we've got a weekend with a strong wind warning posted so I can't test it which is a shame.

This posting is about the frustration that mechanical deadheads like me feel when we can't get the right service 1ST TIME from experts, even though they are very happy to take our cash.

Thanks again guys.

no worries mate. we see technical incompetence here on a daily basis. while I dont like it its a fact of life I guess. however its easy to look good when your surrounded by fools :) .
