Why can the weight of similar boats be so different?

I think I got my power question answered, but now that gave me another question about weight. I am looking at a couple of boats:

19ft - 4.3L Merc - 2900lbs Dry Weight - Openbow 1993 Celebrity
20ft - 4.3L Merc - 2725lbs Dry Weight - Cuddy 1993 Genesis
19ft - 4.3L Merc - 2100lbs Dry Weight - Cuddy 1994 Glastron

These boats are similar size and years, I am surprised that the Cuddies (Cuddys or Cuddies) weigh less than the openbow. Is the lower weight a result of lighter building material or is the added weight for a better built boat? I was just shocked when I looked at the weight of the 19ft Cuddy and saw 2100, another site said 1800lbs.

Thanks again,

I started answering this question on your other thread, but if you read there, you will see I stopped realizing you were starting another...

I would say you need to list the manufacturer.

For instance, a monterey same length same type will weigh more than a bayliner of the same length and type, generally because it is made stronger/better etc.

But early 2000 regals will be light boats with a "fast trac" hull design that from everything I read is a strong hull. It probably really depends on the manufacturer.

Also, I see you're listing dry weights of older boat, the actual weight might need to be checked, as the boats you listed are all over 15 years old and may have water in them, making them heavier.

Simplified, I would water test them, and see how they handle with the different weights and same engine. You could be suprised!

Thank you, I edited my post above and added the manufacturer's names of the boats.

19ft - 4.6L Merc - 2900lbs Dry Weight - Openbow 1993 Celebrity
20ft - 4.6L Merc - 2725lbs Dry Weight - Cuddy 1993 Genesis
19ft - 4.6L Merc - 2100lbs Dry Weight - Cuddy 1994 Glastron

I have a feeling that 2100# cuddy is hull only, and doesn't include engine/drive. Some manufacturers have been known to give hull weight only, EVEN on inboard engine models.

Think of it this way, you are talking at least 500 pounds if not closer to 6 or 7 for the engine/drive/running gear. That would put that boat at 1500 pounds or less by itself. Nope, not happening! (disclaimer, i've been wrong before!)

Listed weights are all over the place for several reasons. As noted different manufacturers buld using different materials and processes. Some list weights with each engine, some only publish the weight with the base engine and you must add for any upgrades. Some weigh with full tanks, some without.

If you would like to scratch your head some more, I have an 18' (actually 17'7") bow rider that weighs in at 2600lbs.

BTW - there is no 4.6L mercruiser, did you mean 4.3 (the v6)

FWIW - a 4.3/alpha combo weighs 886lbs, a v8/alpha combo weighs 986lbs.

Hrmm interesting...I did get the boat weights from different sources here is the iboats source:

Celebrity - 2900 lbs
Genesis - 2650 lbs
Glastron - 1825 lbs

I wonder if that is correct. "This weight does not account for passengers, fuel, or gear."

Yeah they are 4.3. I think my old mans SUV has a 4.6 in it and that is why I got confused.
