Why am I getting this in Photoshop? (screenshot)

Lately I've been having this problem when I use Photoshop. It's an old version (PS Elements 2). Often, but not always, when I open up the program, part of the previous screen view does not disappear. I thought it might be a cache problem, but it still does it after I clear the cache. I also increased the Available RAM in Edit>Preferences>Memory Usage to 80%, but that didn't help.

Any ideas on how I can fix this, or is it just because the software is so old and they are not supplying updates any more?

Maybe..., deleting the prefs file and letting the program redo it. Then you will need to redefine your preferences again.

I don't see a way to delete the pref's file. There's no "Reset" or anything like that in Pref's.

I'm wondering if it's not more of an issue with your display driver. Did you change computers or monitors recently? Upgrades to display drivers and things of that such can start causing you trouble as you get further away from a software version.

I got the computer in 2011, and the monitor is probably from 2006 or 07. When I got this new computer, I kept my old monitor.

Your display driver is waaaaaaayyyy newer than what Elements 2 was designed for. Not a killer necessarily, but I'm thinking you've gotten some type of conflict between the display driver and the software. It probably just started up due to an update to your OS just before you noticed the issue (I'm assuming you're on Windows Vista or 7).

Is the software working right otherwise, or is it having issues besides the latent screen image?.

You might want to download the trial for Elements 12 (new version) and see if you get the same effect.

I found out how to delete the preference settings and did that, but it didn't make any difference. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit. That's the only problem I have, everything else works OK. The latent image will sometimes go away after a while as I use the program.

I also have PS 7 (not Elements) and it does not have the same problem.

Wow ... I'm surprised Elements will even run 64 bit. Photoshop and Elements are an apples and oranges comparison. PhotoShop (proper) handles images completely differently.

I'd give the trial of Elements 12 a whirl and see what happens.

I get latent images like that sometimes when I'm working my graphics card really hard (I do a bunch of 3D work and build some MONSTER PhotoShop files). Image files (even just the pictures you get from the net or your digital camera) have gotten much larger in the last 10 years, and that can effect what's going on.

I'll give 12 a try. I've just been hesitant to move up from Elements 2 because I've gotten to know it pretty well for what I do with images, but maybe it's time I invested the time to move forward! I did try Elements 3 once and considered it a step backward in development in many ways, so I never bothered with any others.

It's more a compatibility issue than function at the moment most likely. I don't know Elements at all really, I've always been working in PhotoShop (have become kinda' a snob, probably). Generally, I find a period of having to really get used to the new version but ultimately some positive steps forward.

What do you do with the images? Might be a better or equal option out there. GIMP is open source, and I've heard some positive things about it.

Re: Why am I getting this in Photoshop? (screenshot)

I use PSE 2 to adjust & resize images for the web and printing, and some very limited layer manipulation. So just the basic stuff really.

On another forum, it was suggested to restart Firefox with add-ons disabled. I did that, and the problem was gone. I enabled them again, and it was back, so I updated some of the add-ons that were not up to date. It seems that Quick Time may have been the culprit.

Thanks for your suggestions & info.

Firefox was effecting the other program? Wow, that's weird. I'm not a big Firefox fan, but I'm surprised it was spreading out that far.

Glad it fixed it though. Ya' go with what works, right? :D

If you don't keep things updated in Firefox, it can cause all kinds of weird problems.
