I do have a mini windows 7 machine, but the chrome books have been problematic for most of the people I know that have bought them.

I don't like how tied you are to google once you get one. To me they are like a big phone with a keyboard. You can get pretty much the same machine with Windows on it at the same price. Look at the HP Stream. They sell it as both.

....and what do you have to say about them?

They're cheep! (<<$300) ) But, It depends totally on what you want to do with your "laptop" (Chromebook)

If you're just using it for browsing the internet and email. They're fine. understand that there's no real software on them because they have no "hard-drive" so in order to do anything, you have to be "online" (WIFI, 4g, etc)

You're really better off with a tablet like an IPAD or other Android type Tab....

My wife thought I was going to get her a Chromebook for Christmas (to replace her "old" Win7 HP laptop) After doing a little research, I got her a MACbook Pro!

(Of course, I get her laptop now. .............a quad-core Hp DV4..... I'll put a solid state drive in it with Linux on it!)

Cheers,

Rick

I've been using a Chromebook exclusively for almost 2 years now (Streambooks weren't out at the time, or I might have gone in that direction). It does almost everything I need if for - web browsing, Netflix, email, etc. One big thing I do miss, however, is a DVD player...

People still use DVDs?

Yeah, I know you can get external DVD players, but will they play the movie on my Chromebook? Any additional software I would need to get in order to play them? Thanks!

There are several packages, including built in ones from Google that will play movies on a chromebook.

If you have a regular computer in the house check out Plex. It is not hard to setup. My Plex server has a ton of content on it and streams to my Rokus or computers. I you pay you can get it on remote devices like phones and tablets when you are not at home.

Install the VLC APP for the Chromebook. Then it will play DVD's using an external drive.

Or, If you have another computer, you can use Handbrake https://handbrake.fr/downloads.php to "rip" any dvd and create a video file that you can copy to a thumbdrive. (you can get 32 and 64gb USB type drives).

A DVD holds around 4.7gb.(1 movie) and you have to carry around the drive & cable that will drain your Chromebook battery faster while it's in use.............

With a 64gb USB "Stick", you could conceivably copy 12 movies to, it fits in your pocket and it doesn't place an additional drain on your battery.

I would just rip the movies and play them off the ripped file. DVDs are a pain in the but if you are thinking about using them on an airplane.

Same here. But if you want to take them with you, it's a real pain to carry around a bunch of DVD's , drive, and a cable etc.....
I also use a thumb drive when I want to watch a movie on my new HD TV. I really don't like hanging the portable DVD drive off the back of that thing...
