The Tashasdaddy thread and Branden got me to thinking.

I've seen some here and I'm sure their's many more stories...

Who's been a mentor?

After reading Branden's post I realized I have been doing the
same thing as TD for the last year and a half.

Most of us who are successful in what we do have been
mentored by someone. It's a wonderful thing to do. :)

I've been involved in a mentoring program called STEP for a few years now. Frustrating and rewarding.

We have a program at the Academy. I have a dozen kids who I work with regularly, invite to dinner and fishing, take their calls at 1am when troubled, provide career advise, etc...
Usually one or two I feel I've made a difference and makes it worth while. Some just go through the motions.

Whether you are in a military enviroment, employer, or the old guy on the job site, I have always found that the younger people always look for some input either it be work or personelly related.
With time in, there comes responsibility to pass on knowledge.
And I think that is what a mentor does.

Re: Who's been a mentor?

I guess I have?....

6 years ago a friend of mine was talking about our local 4-H fair and how it was just about belly up... He was asking me if I knew of anything that could bring in some money. My first love, motocross, came to mind.

5 years ago I broke ground on a 3 acre piece of land and made a MX track... took a couple of months to do it. We didn't have the money for fuel, tractor rentals, etc... So we went around to local business's and asked for donations. We made about 3K and I threw in 1K of my own money to get us started.

We've been racing ever since, multiple events a year (6-10 a year) and its the biggest money maker our fair grounds has ever seen. I won't go into the details of the money, but its profitable.

Every year, I work with a couple of young riders (not the same ones every year). We work on riding skills, proper diet, exercise and life in general. We do this during the week when I get off work. Some of them become better riders and some of the don't.... I just hope they become good people because they had a place to ride and race in a sport that they love.

And one more thing... I've never been paid for 1 minute of my time, and its the same for every track worker. Its a 100% volunteer effort! And its the only track around that does this.

I came real close to making a living riding a dirtbike years ago... but I made some bad choices and didn't stay with it, I burned bridges and went down the wrong road for quite a while.... So if I can keep one kids mind on MX and not on drugs or booze, then I've done what I set out to do.
