I was recently at the sport show in Collinville IL, and ask 2 Mercury dealers if they work on Tohatsu motors and they said no. I told them that both motor were the same except for minor things. they said not the same as a merc.??? Who is correct.:blue: AS THE CLOSET DEALER DON'T ANSWER PHONE OR EMAILS.. Bare in mind my new 9.8 runs like a top. but has been out for a month due to ice.

It has a different shift and carburetor...If they can work on a Mercury they can work on a Tohatsu. The average Mercury dealer has no idea that their engine is a Tohatsu product.

Rich,

The Merc carb is essentially just the European version. Either works fine... the US Tohatsu version is a bit simpler.

The Merc shifter may be integrated with the throttle on the tiller arm. That setup is convenient, but is less reliable... in fact, Merc has released a kit to convert it back to the Tohatsu style shift if desired.

Tohatsu designs for the best, simplest, and most reliable operation.
