...This guy. Probably the dumbest thing I've ever done. It was in the full down position and I was standing over it, on the ground when I couldn't get it to release. Well, it released right into my nose. It dropped me and I bled all over the yard. Please be careful doing the obvious, lol. So dumb!

Easy mistake to make. Hopefully no permanent damage.

If you're in the boat how can you possibly release it without standing over it? It has an 11" travel. Use your hands and keep your head a foot up.

I really dislike the kicker brackets that you describe, all of the one's I have used, are a pain in the butt to deploy and use in general. Your mistake is a new one, but as stated, only once. Glad your OK. I dumped the kicker, and went to a bow mounted trolling motor, the bracket is still there, but I don't use it anymore, too hard to deploy and then operate when fishing, I had to sit in that corner of the boat, and constantly adjust, leaning back and over the transom. Every boat is different, you will get better at using it.

OMC used to make a kicker bracket with no springs, but a hydraulic cylinder to assist it going up and down. Simple to use, no effort required and it moved as slowly or as quickly as you wanted it to go.

They were so good that a few years ago when I had the chance to buy a NOS model on EBay I jumped at it just so I'd have a spare for the future if I ever needed one.

My current boat has 30 seasons on it with this bracket. I've never demounted the motor and I've driven on the highway all these years with the motor and bracket in place.
