I am curious as to who pick the gear ratio when a new boat is ordered, does a customer specify the ratio or the manufacturer picks on a particular based on the design criteria, I am curious because i have ordered a new boat and see if there is advantages of different gear rations, I have been reading up on it, but still have many questions as i am still learning.... oh mine will be a alpha 1.

Re: who picks stern driver gear ratio

It's determined by the designer and usually only modified for elevation. Two identical boat/engine combos would have different gear ratios if one was sold in New Hampshire and one was sold in Colorado. The engine, gear ratio, and prop should be selected for correct WOT RPM and the boat manufacturer has already done all the testing to make sure it will be correct. You could probably request a different gear ratio, but I think it would be a bad idea unless you knew you were going to use the boat for some special purpose.
