Who Named America?

Okay so I was watching a programme last night on the BBC and the question came up: "Who is America named after?"

Being the smart alec that I am I shouted out the answer to show off to Ms Deezy and it turns out I was wrong!

So, it must be something that Americans are taught in school but is it correct?

Who named America?

Ps. I know the answer now and if you want a clue look here but don't reveal the answer just yet: it would be interesting to see just how many people actually know the answer (without googling!) ;) :p

Re: Who Named America?

Bassy you could try this but again it's the same historian.....

Of course you could introduce it to the class as a debate? See which one they prefer? It certainly makes sense given the way countries were named then.

I just thought it was very interesting or maybe I was just miffed because I was wrong; I really should be getting used to that feeling by now :(

That's is a darn good question Stan.

It's not something that I was taught in school. Or if it was, I didn't store it in my memory vaults.

AK Chappy

Sure, Link. With 32 students, what's one more? But the question is will you be on your best behavior or will you not? ;)
Bassy

Re: Who Named America?

In reading the responses it appears that the link is more important than the actual answer. I avoid trick questions and links supplied on community websites. It appears that the question has be answered correctly from the facts but this looks like something that is better left alone. Opinions to the contrary not withstanding.... I thank you.... ;)
Standard Disclaimer

I'm inclined to agree with Rodbolt on this. Maybe we were brainwashed in school.

I always heard it was Sitting Bull's great-granddady as a wedding present to his soon-to-be wife, squaw Ka. It was when he said, "Now I-merry-Ka!"

And that's the rest of the story.

I feel so...so...disillusioned!

I do remember thinking it was funny that he (Vespucci) used his first name.
