I have a 1995 Johnson 90hp engine which purrs like a kitten, but has developed a little bit of corrosion on the steering arm (see picture). Does anyone know where to get one of these, and how much it might cost? It looks like it may be someone costly and time-intensive to install, but it's gonna have to be done sooner or later.
Thanks!
ps.. What exactly does a mechanic do when they recondition an outdrive? I just got a $500 bill to have it done, however I have no idea what they did. Thanks

Brett.... You can order the steering bracket through your local dealership.

However, it's a common thing to see that item get a heavy dosage of surface rust, but I have yet to see one break because of the rust. I'd suggest that you use a pointed or chisel edge tool, taping the tool against the bracket to break away the rust..... however, only you know to what extent it's rusted.

If it is salvageable, after getting that rust out of the way, blow it off with compressed air, wash it down with acetone, prime it thoroughly with Green Zink Chromate primer (available in spray cans at your local dealership), then paint it whatever color required.

To replace it, you must first remove the lower unit, then disconnect the steering and the electrical supply to the engine. Then, supporting the engine with a lift, remove the top and lower motor mount retaining bolts, after which the engine, exhaust housing, tuning tube, etc can be backed away from the steering/swivel bracket assy.

Now, with the swivel/steering bracket in a tilted up position, remove the large nut from the bottom of the steering tube and remove the lower motor mount bracket.

You can now lift out and remove the steering bracket. It's quite an ordeal to replace one of those items. Good luck.

wow
Joe is a master of the understatement judging by that picture. saltwater motors are always more fun than fresh.
my cure is to buy another midsection anymore.
good luck and keep posting but I think I would try the old scrape and paint then keep it coated with fluid film.

Hi Brett, FYI one inch of rust is about one eight inch of material. It looks like you have about three more inches of rust too go before you need to replace the arm.

That is the old steering yoke. Made of very strong spring steel and yes, most old hats I'm told have never seen one snap off due to rust.

Newer Ocean Pro/Runners use stainless steel for this part now so maybe you can get that piece that fits.
