Who does Video Chats?

We have a large extended family and friends, and my wife had a video chat the other day with the wife of the buddy I lost back in April and really enjoyed it, I was just wondering how many here are actually using this technology and what shortfalls have you found with it?

I am thinking about purchanging cameras for my whole family this year for Christmas, so we can all see each other once in a while...

Is it worth it?

My wife and I Skype when either one of us is out of town and she also Skypes with her mother and sister in Canada.

It's nice to put a face with the voice.

We Skype all the time. My wife's family is in Germany so it's great to connect live with the video. Almost like being there. Well, except for the good beer and pretzels. Jeez...I could eat a good schnitzel just about now. :facepalm:

I skype with lots of iboats folks and family, it's great to put a name and face to those you correspond with.


We have had some full house weekends and holidays with our iboats friends just because we connected on line.

Skype with some friends in Minnesota and Family in Michigan quite a bit ... use it for work sometimes too.

I have been using skpe for a number of years, and it is very nice to see family and friends.

Yep, but when in Ghana, sometimes the signal isn't fast enough to video chat, so you have to kill the camera to yak.

Hell, I prefer a text over a phone call much less video chat

We get that sometimes when my wife is in China too, but talking long distance to China any time of day or night for free you can't really complain.

We mostly do Skype/iChat with the kids while they are away at college. It also came in really handy when one of them was in Italy for the summer.

I use it to talk with a former co-worker who is now working in Kuwait and it is good to see him. I have a small fairly high resolution web cam that hangs off the monitor.

I use free Gmail phone with video chat.

Thanks Summer, but I still got to get the camera, my wife's computer has one built in, unfortunately none of my computers have cameras in them.

The "Crystal Eye" on my 3-year-old Acer laptop still has the protective film on it.

MT, Just take your digital camera and set it to webcam mode then plug it into the USB port.

Thats what I do. I'm using a Fuji S3100 for a webcam.

The "Crystal Eye" on my 3-year-old Acer laptop still has the protective film on it.

My Acer has a cover over the spot for a camera, I was looking on ebay and I can get the built in camera for my acer for less than $5

Might have to do that!

My Dad still uses a rotary phone and a top mount VCR. He says computers are for kids and nerds. Don't see us Skyping anytime soon.

My Dad said the same thing ... until one day

He's writing some simple programs now

Skype is a way of life for us now. Video call home a couple of times a day when I am away on business wherever in the world that may be. Use it for communicating with the office during business trips as well. Use it further to talk to family in England as well. Use the group call feature quite often as well and have a call with Mrs Ken and some or all of the children.
Some freezing here and there but for the price it is certainly the way to go !!!
