Can anyboby tell me why at about 3000 RPM's theres like a whirling or whinning noise on the 130hp motor. The motor is just so quiet that I can pick that right out. Its like you'll hear it right at around 3000 give or take a 100. It just seems kind of strange.

Take a six foot chunk of garden hose and hold one end to your ear while with the other end "probe around" the motor while it's making the sound. This may help you pinpoint the issue.

Sometimes these engines, and I'm talking about all outboards can set up a harmonic vibe with the boat they are operating. This means that at some RPM the engine is actually in tune with the hull and causing it to sing , like a piano tuner uses a tuning fork.Remedies vary as to how annoying this is to you and honestly may not exist.

Re: Whinning noise

Hondon thanks for the reply. Its just kind of wierd. If it were the old 2 stroke you would never hear it. As noisey as that was. But being every thing is so quiet you can hear everything. And that is basically what my dealer just told me the other day. Apparently he was checking with Honda on it becaues he's got a couple of other guys that he's been question from about it. There's like three of us out of how many I'm not sure can hear it at that certian RPM. But it doesn't do it all the time. And also he said its just on the 130. I'll have to keep track and see if there is a pattern. I'm not to worried about it at this point. Thanks again!

Re: Whinning noise

You may have noticed in another thread I had some work done under warranty through Honda. This was one of the issues. I seemed to get this humming, almost like wind through hydro wires. One mechanic told me he had seen it before but had no clue what it was. When we tried different motor heights on the transom, the noise either disappeared or occurred at a different rpm. After using the motor for the season, I noticed that it didn't seem to mysteriously occur somethimes and not others, it was dependant on the trim angle. Most noticeable with heavier loads in the back and bow down but the noise ALWAYS disappeared when I trimmed bow up. try this, see if it's the same with yours. I agree with the above post, it's harmonic resonating.
Probabably the ONLY disadvantage of having such a quiet motor, eh? ;)

When MajBach said "almost like wind through hydro wires" it reminded me of a noise of this type that I get under certain conditions. I've even been able to identify it. In my case it comes on when I'm comming off of plane.

My speedo is driven by a paddle wheel that mounts to my sounder. This is the cause of my whinning noise. You can check this by carefully disableing the paddle wheel with a little piece of wood.
