While running and in gear, motor suddenly loses throttle and begins to idle

We've been borrowing a friends Parker with Yamaha outboard 225 Saltwater Series Fuel Injected(unsure of year) for about a year now. Ran well last year. While testing it over the weekend for this coming up year, we had a problem. First hour had no issues at all. We were running about 35 mph when we suddenly lost speed and motor shut off like if you pull the key out. It restarted right back up and we began to accelerate again. It happened again shortly after, this time around 30 mph. We continued this process until it began to happen as low as 15 mph. We idled back to the dock. As the mph dropped, we were unable to go any faster than the previous time of the problem. Any ideas on what the issue may be?

It could be the overheat protection kicking in. Was the motor peeing? even if it was it could still mean there is a blockage somewhere in the cooling system.
Did you hear any beeps or buzzers as this happened??

Didnt pay attention to the peeing at the time, but if i had to guess I would say yes it was. It was peeing when we flushed it afterwards at home. No beeps or buzzers

If your motor senses an oiling problem or an overheat condition it's designed to reduce RPM's to about 2000 and an alarm buzzer should go off. All this is an attempt to protect the motor from damage. Maybe get everything checked out and fixed(including buzzer) before you run it again. How long since water pump impeller was replaced? Good Luck!

Did you get any indicator on the tach when the problem was happening?
When was the last time you tested the alarms system to make sure it functions?

I'm trying to remove the bottom part of the motor to change the water pump and I'm having problems removing it. I made sure to remove all bolts but I still can't get it off. The back end closest to the boat is where my problem is; Im able to loosen the front about 1/4 inch. Not sure the last time it was removed. I tried tapping with rubber mallet and wiggling the best I could. Any advice or tips on removing it?

did you remove the anode on the bottom of the lower unit on top of the prop oooo and not shure if your engine is like mine thier is a bolt under the black plastic on top of the cavetation plate towards the back of the engine under it thier is a bolt if i am not mistaken that holds the anode it is hidden to sight

I have a SS2 200hp that was kinda doing the same thing you describe. My problem was the O2 sensor. I would be underway and thn all of a sudden, I'd be biting the winshield. The loss of power may be different than what you are experiencing, but it sounds similar enough.
