Which winch?

The old winch is tired & rusty & ready to be retired - no, this question is not about trophy wives, it's about weight rating...should it match the boat? It's not like I'm gonna be lifting the boat off the ground with it or anything. Boat's around 1200lbs fully loaded.<br /><br />thanks!

Straight pull is different than lifting so a 1000# would work. When selecting a winch though, its all about ratio. The higher numeric ratio (say 250:1 vs 200:1) pick the 250:1. It will crank easier but line take-up is less per crank revolution. Remember physics 101?
