Normally i fish in lakes and very small rivers. I have a 12 lb river anchor that does a pretty good job at holding my 17' v-hull boat in place. This year i plan to fish the "Mighty Mississippi" river. I have never been on a big river before and was wondering what type and weight anchor i should get. Thanks in advance for all your input.

I use a Navy anchor in the Mississippi and it holds well. (It also does well at the lake we visit in Canada that has a rocky bottom.) For recreational use, it's fine. I think mine is a 24 pound anchor with about 15 feet of heavy chain attached to it.

I use a Digger Anchor (15lb) for my 22' Sea Ray. Holds well both in the Mississippi and Lake Superior. When stuck, move forward and pull up. The flukes disengage and up she comes. I recommend a chain, even though they say you don't need one.
