Which Trolling Motor?

Anyone with experience with trolling motors please give me some advice.
I just started fishing last spring and feel I need a trolling motor. I had my mind made up on a Minn Kota Autopilot 55 lb thrust with 54" shaft. Then I found out my wife can get a substantial discount on a MotorGuide through her job. I have read on some boards that the MotorGuides are noisy and my Uncle has a Lazer 2 and the steering is very noisy (but I know his sits outside all the time).
Are MotorGuides troublesome, anyone who has either brand please let me know how you like or dislike it.
Thanks, Jeff

------------------
2000 Lund 1650 Angler SS
Mercury 50

I like my motorguide. Its a great white 55 or 60.. we have run it in some pretty bad conditions and not treated it too well and it keeps going. This could turn out to be a chevy Vs Ford kind of a thing (and we all know Ford are better right?)

Dave

Re: Which Trolling Motor?

Hello,
I have owned both Motor Guide and Minn Kota trolling motors. My Minn Kota was a power drive and I had a lot of problems with it right of the bat. It was replaced twice by Minn Kota but the new one still gave me trouble so I just replaced it with a MotorGuide Lazer 41 Lb thrust. The Motorguide is a nice motor. Yes the steering is a little noisey but that is what you get when you have a motor using a steel gear and a shaft with a steel gear. It takes the abuse of rocks and stumps and keeps going. The only problem is the foot petal is not waterproof like thay say it is. It will start acking up in heavy rain when it gets soaked. They know about the problem and are working on a solution. I would go Motorguide even with the problem as they will work with you if you have a problem. I had to keep calling Minn Kota to finely get some resolution for my problem where Motorguide helps right of the bat. I may have just hit a bad batch of Minn Kota motors but this was my experience with both motors.

------------------
Scott
