I have a 1999 22' Hurricane deck boat that weighs 2000# with a 200merc which weighs 500#. I have been told I need a 42" shaft and at least a 65# thrust. My boat papers say it is a 12/24v. Can I use a motor that says 24/36v? What is the difference between 24/36 and 12/24? I fish in Oklahoma and its windy alot, do you think a 65# is big enough? Which motor is the best, Motorguide or Minn Kota? Any particular model you would stay away from? I dont want expensive because I dont fish all that often. Maybe 15-20 trips per year. I also want to be able to remove the motor on occasion. Thanks for the advice. Do you prefer hand steer or foot and why?

My personal favorite is Minn Kota. The difference between 12/24 and 12/36 is simply the number of batteries you carry. You'll need three for 36 and two for 12/24.

I think 65# is enough. I would stay away from 12/36 simply due to the weight and complexity.

Most MK's have detachable mounts as an option. They use a relatively flat plate that remains permanent on the deck.
