Which Suzuki?

I'm looking at an ad for a boat with a Suzuki 2.7L EFI 225 HP. No other information in the ad.

Is this a 2 or 4 stroke? Or can it be either?
I'd call them but it's 12:50 AM.

Thanks,
James

Re: Which Suzuki?

I've read some pros and cons of 2/4 strokes but how about the noise? Is a 4 stroke quieter (then this Suzuki 2 stroke)?
I think EFI is electronic Fuel Injection. What is DFI and why is it better? Happen to know the model number for this 2002 Suzuki EFI 225 HP?
Thanks,
James

Re: Which Suzuki?

That would be either a DT225TCXK2 or a DT225TCXGK2, James. I don't know what the difference is.

EFI 2 strokes inject fuel into the intake air stream. They are slightly superior to carbed engines because of computer control of the mixture.

DFI inject fuel directly into the cylinder and oil the crankcase seperately. DFI is superior because it does not pump any fuel out the exhaust port during scavenging. That results in far better efficiency and emissions. They also usually use a lot less oil.

How about noise? Is this 2 stroke Suzuki louder then an average 4 stroke?

Thanks!

yes a 2-stroke is louder than a 4-stroke, you can hardly hear a 4-stroke idle, a 2-stroke you can hear idle even if you going a bit deaf ........

Yep. A lot louder. I've got an '03 150 Suzy that's the 2.7 liter also. Idle is not bad but anything over that, better figure on not hearing the guy next to you.

EFI 2 strokes inject fuel into the intake air stream. They are slightly superior to carbed engines because of computer control of the mixture.

DFI inject fuel directly into the cylinder and oil the crankcase seperately.

So it would be equivalent to a cars TBI with one injector in the throttle body and MPI with one injector per cylinder?

Re: Which Suzuki?

Well, EFI is equivalent to TBI in a car, but DFI is not the same as MPI in a car.

MPI in a car still injects fuel into the intake air stream. DFI injects directly into the cylinder, more like a Diesel or a 1955 Mercedes Benz 300SL.

One advantage of DFI in a 2 stroke (or a 4 stroke) is that it allows a stratified charge. . .the fuel/air mix is richer at the spark plug for good ignition and leaner in other parts of the combustion chamber for more complete burning of a charge that averages leaner. Same (or more) power from less fuel and lower emissions.

DFI is beginning to show up in some cars (VW, for one) but it's advantage over MPI is smaller than in 2 stroke engines so it isn't getting big press.

Re: Which Suzuki?

One more question (maybe).
How would the noise level of a 120 HP 2 stroke and 120 HP 4 stroke compare to a 120 I/O (I had an '88 Mercruiser 120).
Thanks again.

Re: Which Suzuki?

A lot of variables there from one brand to another and one boat to another, but my experience is that 4 stroke outboards are quieter than I/Os and most 2 stroke outboards, particularly at low speed. I think the E-tec is an exception. . .as quiet as most 4 strokes.
