Which spark plug for generator?

I have a 10HP Generac 5000w generator that made our loss of power for three days bearable during our ice storm last December.

I was running the old gas out and getting it ready for storage a few days ago and managed to break off the spark plug insulator. I think my plug socket rubber had grabbed the porcelain but the hex wasn't really seated on the plug, so when I put the muscle to it, it just broke off.

No problem, I thought, I'll just get another one. I broke a Champion RN14YC, but all I can find in any of the stores locally is RN12YC. I know the difference is the heat range, but will it matter which one I use? I think the 14 is hotter and better at burning off carbon and keeping it from getting fouled, which is good, running at a steady speed for hours at a time.

Should I hunt down some 14's or will the 12's be OK?

You should get the correct plug, if you can't get the same brand, then have them use the cross reference chart to find another brand of the same range that will work.

definitely get the correct heat range... if you can't find an oem plug get it crossed to either an NGK or a denso plug.

Thanks, guys, I was also thinking it would be worth the effort. I'm sure somebody around must have it in stock, I'll just have to keep looking.

Check a small engine/lawnmower repair center near you. RN14YC are very common in the newer OHC small engines.
