Which replacement starter for Volvo?

Kind of confused here....I removed the starter from my model# 57GSIPBYCCE and it has the "straight" bolt pattern. However, when I gave that # to Volvo they said I needed starter part# 3860764 which is an "offset" bolt pattern. From what I have read the straight bolt pattern was for the smaller flywheel and the offset was for the larger one. It seems like my flywheel doesn't match up with my engine block? How is that possible? I don't know the history of the motor other than it was replaced in 1997.
By the way i would like to replace the original OEM with a marine "mini" gear reduction starter, anyone have any experience with these? And which one fits my application?
The starter i removed was to rusted to read any kind of part# from it.

Engine product# 3868771
Serial# 4110154696

Thanks for any info...

That engine originally came with a large (14 inch) flywheel and a gear reduction starter with an offset bolt patter.
Someone obviously swapped out flywheels, starters, etc.
What year and type outdrive do you have?

Thanks for your quick response Don!
The outdrive is a DP-A2 (872783)
Serial# 3102177502
The boat is an '88 model so I'm assuming this was the original outdrive, I have paperwork stating the motor was replaced in May/1997.

So when I order a starter for this motor what specifically should I ask for?
Thanks again'

Ayuh,.......

With Chevies,... You Have to match the Block, which matches the starter to the flywheel used.......

Regardless of What Was in the boat when New,.....
If you've got a Block with Only the Straight Across bolt pattern,+ the 12" flywheel.......
That's the Starter you Need.........

Re: Which replacement starter for Volvo?

Being an 88, you would have probably had an AQ231, AQ271, or AQ311 engine in it as they were used between 86 thru 89. The flywheel cover (Bellhousing to automotive jargon) was designed to fit over the 12" flywheel, used on the old style blocks.
The new (97) engine that was installed had a 14" flywheel. It wouldn't fit under the old style flywheel cover. The proper fix would have been to stick with the 14" flywheel and replace the flywheel cover with the newer style. Then you wouldn't have to be looking for the all this off the wall stuff.
But, you can get a a gear reduction starter for what you have. Arco has a Gear reduction (marine starter) that will fit the older engines, which is now the type you need.
