which outboard - Honda or Tohatsu 15hp

I'm looking for a replacement outboard trading up from an old 15hp 2 stroke - I like the reputation /build quality of the Honda range and looking at another 15hp motor. Then I saw some good things about the Tohatsu range.
I thought the Tohatsu was a bit lighter with EFi, at 43kg, the Honda being 47kg? I need to lug this from a car boot onto the transom by myself so that might be a deciding factor.
Any thoughts on the two options? The Honda is a bit more expensive, but its not something I plan to do often so is the reputation worth a little more?

With the EFI system, with 15hp and 20hp Tohatsu motors seem to be identical - is it only different engine mapping that makes the output 15 or 20?

Any thoughts welcome...

Yep, both 4 strokes Tohatsu motors are 333 CC, so the EFI computer must be different on the 20 HP. What's the price difference between both 2 ?

Hi Searider, the difference is likely to be around £300, not a small amount but its a purchase I hope will last, so over 10 yrs maybe the difference isn't as important as getting the right one. They're both heavier than I would prefer but about as light as 4 strokes come. The Honda may be easier to work with having a carb rather than EFi, but I'm hoping that either will be reliable. There aren't any dealers nearby so regular servicing will be likely down to me. Although its 25 yrs old, I would keep the old 2 stroke rather than get a more recent one, as the improvement isn't likely to be that significant.

The MFS9.9/15/20E are all the same block, with different ECU and air flow restrictor.
The EFI system is so reliable that I have never had to work on one. Drain the vapor separator for off season storage is about the only fuel system maintenance needed.
They are rock solid, lighter, and should last a lifetime. No question Tohatsu is the better value.

Personally would go for the Tohatsu 20 HP motor, will serve you well if plan powering a larger boat in the future. Just prop it right for your current application.

Something worth considering possibly, is the availability of decent support if that becomes necessary. Not just a dealer, but a dealer staffed by people that have a clue.

Thanks, all good points we're a bit landlocked but about 2 hours drive away from some dealers who get good reviews. The Tohatsu warranty looks good but relies on having yearly services so not entirely without cost, but good to have.

Something that put me off the Honda was some instances of corrosion problems on some models, although this seemed to be about 10 years ago. Should have sorted it by now i would hope.

The Tohatsu does look like much better value hopefully wont lose too much if resale is even an issue. Good to hear they're relatively maintenance free EFi systems!

I like the idea of the 20hp, plus a prop would be around £400 more, no weight or size penalty.

Thats great thanks all, looking forward to some time on the water soon.
