Which oil to use on an older Evinrude motor

Hello All,

It's that time of year! Let's hit the waters!

I have a 1982 2 stroke 70 HP Evinrude ourboard. I've been running XD30 oil in my 50:1 mix. Someone has recommended XD50. I've also heard about XD100.

Which oil would be the best to use with my motor? I'm not concerned about the cost factor but overall performance epsecially at lower RPM's. I'm worried about "loading up: or lugging the engine. I do have a 6 HP for trolling but I'm concerned about just moving around at lower speeds with my 70 HP.

I'm going to switch to the XD50 but what about the XD100. Is it too "lean" for my older motor?

Please weigh in!

Thx,

Jack

There is no benefit to be found running the most expensive oil you can find in your '82 engine (which is at least 10 years short of "old").

Any TC-W3 certified oil will give her all the lubrication she can use at 50:1. I used WalMart Super Tech TC-W3 in all my 2 strokes for years. No amount of money spent on high priced outboard oil will make a well maintained outboard last 30 seconds longer. Take care of her, feed her TC-W3 and she will outlast you.

If you are concerned about pollution you can use any TC-W3 certified synthetic outboard oil, such as Pennzoil Synthetic. You will pollute less, stink less, smoke less and go longer between need for decarbonizing.

My '79 Johnny 70HP used to troll the Gulf Stream for 6-8 hours at a time at about 700rpm.

What "somebody recommends" is sometimes just know-it-all poppycock.

Really?

So running it at idle for long periods is nothing to worry about? Stepping up to XD50 will not matter?

Good to know.

Thx!

Nope, moving to XD50 won't matter and will only lighten your wallet faster.....won't make a hill of beans of difference to your motor, given its age. Since your motor was designed for a TC-W2 oil, ANY TC-W3 oil you can buy is vastly superior to the oil it was designed to use. So, like JB said, use the cheapest TC-W3 stuff you can find.....it'll be much better than what your OB was designed to use.

im running the 14 buck a gallon penzoil you get at walmart(caught it on sale for 10 so i got two:D ) i have five twos strokes, 1956 5.5hp and 15hp a 1973 50hp evinrude a 90's tohastu m60b and a johnson 140 all run this oil
HOWEVER we had when i was a kid a 1979 85 johnson on the back of our mako and it saw nothing but supertech's two stroke oil and ran flawlessly for nearly a decade until my dad left the dock without putting any oil in the tank after filling up.... alas it only ran about 20mins after that... so price makes no difference and unless cali will let you run a two stroke in one of them two stroke

restricted lakes if you run xd50 i aint buying it now if i had an etec i might - maybe but probably only if they made me do it

XD100 is a DFI oil. It buys you nothing unless you can run a 100:1 ratio which you can?t do in your motor.

XD50 has a decarb additive in its formulation so there is no need to use expensive additives like Seafoam or Ringfree in your fuel supply. Saves money in the long run.

Super Tech form Wally World here, I can putt around at idle all day long with almost no smoke and no load up, oil is oil as long as it has the TCW-3 rating you are fine, expensive oil in an older outboard is like running premium gas, doesn't do anything but cost more.

The XD-100 synthetic oil would be great for your motor but is not worth the extra cost of the premium oil.

XD-50 would be the best all around lubricant as it is semi-synthetic, helps clean the carbon inside the motor, and it hardly smokes at all at 50:1.

Various brands of TC-W3 certified oils will work OK but many will deposit more carbon in the motor and may smoke more.

Thank you all of weighing in.

I think that I will try the XD50. Seems like no down side (other than cost) and I'll like the placebo effect it will have on me when I'm idling around with it.

Cheers!
