I recently purchased 2 50 Hp Mercs, one 1972 and one 1966. Anyone have any suggestions on which is a better motor and why?<br />Obviously the newer one makes the most sense, but I was wondering if the 66' was a better model? Any suggestions are appreciated. :p

Are you looking at a full restoration ,or are you just trying to get these old girls up and running?

Up and running dependably! That's all that I care about. Have any suggestions?

Do compression test, spark test, inspect lower unit lube on both. Whichever is healthiest, go for it. Might also check parts availability and price on both models to see if there's a big difference. If they both pass the test, flip a coin! :D

You will find a lot better parts availability for the '72. Also it will have a better ignition system. Unless there is something terminally wrong with it I would fix the newer one for sure.

The 66 has points and the 72 had electronic ignition. Much better system.
