Both are good motors. Which one has better service in your area? Which one has better fuel economy? Which one has less noise? After answering these questions and prioritizing your answers, you have your winner.
Personally I would lean toward the Suzuki, if there was a good dealer close by. I have a few friends with them an they start right up after sitting for a year and run great
Merc is 359 lbs 2.1 liter 2.07 gear ratio
Suzy is 341lbs 1.5 liter 2.59 gear ratio. Larger displacement should give more low end power.
2.59 gear ratio should be more pontoon friendly than 2.07.

In all honesty over the years I have had several brands of motors and ever one has given me excellent service,I have found as long as you take care and service one it will run fine.
I have a 2011 Merc on my pontoon boat and it has treated me well to date. Having a Merc dealer/servicing center at the marina next door is a plus too.....it gets professional regular maintenance as recommended......I am considering a new motor for my runabout and it will most likely be a Merc too.
As long as we're still at it;check out the direct injection 2 strokes like the Evinrude Etec.
Etec has no break in period,no service for 3 years or 300 hours.
Also fewer and less complicated service intervals.
