I have to replace my 93 mercs 200hp due to blowing up one this past weekend. My question is if given the choice for reliability only which motor would you choose: Merc 200 carb / Merc 225efi / Merc 225 opti? I know each has fuel advantages, but my main concern is reliability. I am leaning towards the 200 carb because Merc has been making it for so many years, but I would like to hear you opinions. Also, I understand that there have been some problems with powerheads and lower units on the 3.0liters. Is this true?

Thanks for the advice!!!!!

OF THE THREE YOU MENTION . I WOULD CHOOSE THE 225 EFI IT IS A VERY RELIABLE ENGINE THAT HOLDS UP WELL,AND IT IS ALSO A VERY GOOD PERFORMING ENGINE .

Carbs are old school and not as reliable (How many autos manufactured recently have carbs, very few, if any). Go with fuel injection, you won't be disapointed. Turn-key starts, no playing with the throttle and choke. EFI vs DFI, how fat is your wallet? If you put alot of hours on your engine, you may make up the gas mileage eventually. :)

I judt replaced my twin 225 EFIs with the Optimax. The fuel ecomony is huge. I agree the EFIs are great motors but if you put alot of hours on your boat they will cost you more in the long run. I believe Mercury is now offering an extented warranty also out to 5 years if you purchase them by the end of the month, no extra charge!!!

I dont believe that carbs are "less reliable", i actually believe they are more reliable with proper care and maintenance. It is just more effort and less performance and effiency that EFI is used in autos and high end motors. The cost factor can make carb the best option for a lot of people. If you are not one to care for your engine and price is not a factor, and hole shots and quick starts are...than go EFI.

If the question is reliability alone I think I would rule out the Opti. There are just too many ways for something to go wrong. Both the carb and efi motors are well proven though and I don't see any difference in relibility between them.
