Hello,

I was wondering what type of oil I should use in the gearcase of my 1960 Evinrude Lighttwin 3 HP? It is the no shift model with the weedless drive. Above the drain fill plug is says "fill with hypoid oil", but it doesn't state the viscosity. I have a bottle of OMC hi-vis gearcase lube that I was going to use, but I want to make sure it is the right stuff before I fill the gearcase. I looked in a crappy repair manual and it says to use OMC Type "A" lubricant. Can I substitute the Hi-vis for the Type "A"?
Any advice would be graetly appreciated.

Thanks,
H&H

that's replaced the type A. you fill from the bottom and let air escape the top. that way you know it's full. they now make a $10 pump to make it easier.

The $10 pump is worth it's weight gold if you do it more than once a year... It saves a big mess.

Hypoid" oil is 90 weight. Hi=Vis is an excellent more up-to-date oil. Actually, that motor is not fussy. Plain ol' 80-90 outboard gear oil from Wal-Mart is just fine.
