Which control cables does my Merc need?

I just bought a 94 Mercury 40 hp, 4 cyl 2 stroke. I want to setup a console so will need a control and cables for throttle and shift, as well as steering. I have been looking at various sites online trying to get an idea of what is available and see several types of control cables, apparently depending on either the type of control, or the motor. I figured I would see choices for the various motor brands, but Mercury I found 600 series, 2000, 3000, 4000 series cables (I think) but cant find an explanation of differences or applications that will steer me in the right direction. Can anyone help me sort this out, please?

click control cable at the top of this page. mercury motors have to have a controller that is compatible, and the cable ends have to be merc. also search controls in the iboats marine store. you also have to have the correct wiring harness for your engine. the plugs have to match. or you have to buy a very expensive adapter.

Thanks for the direction. I looked at that link before but stopped reading when I saw model numbers, but before I saw the dates covered...DOH!
So, I know that I need the 600A variety, now where can I find out how to measure for them, like is easily found for steering cables? Is there a formula like that for throttle/shift cables too? Or is this a topic for the manufacturer to answer?

i measure from where the control is going to be to the back of the boat, then side of boat to center, when looking at the engine from the front, if the cable goes in on the right add 3 ft, i on left add 2 feet. that's how i do it. if uneven ft go to next higher. better longer than short.
