I've searched all the posts and haven't found anything basic enough, so I called my dealer and he tells me "They don't work on anything that old." So, here I am, begging for help...

Here's my story... This engine has always run fine. I bought it new in 75. The only thing I've ever had to replace is the fuel pump diaphram. It probably has less than 300 hours on it. Last time out, I was just mushing back to the ramp at about 1/3 throttle. Suddenly, it just quit; no coughing/sputtering etc. It quit so abruptly that
my son asked if I had turned the key off. Started it up and it ran smoothly for about another three hundred yards and quit again. One more try... same thing.

We got it home, checked all the plugs/spark etc. Everything looked fine. Ran it in the driveway for about twenty minutes and it quit again; same way.

Can someone tell me where to start? I'd really like to get in a little more fishing
before I croak.

Thanks in advance,

"One day, you'll all be old... Hope you'll be better at it than I am."

Hey Oldtimer, Im an old timer too.First you need to get a service manual. Grubbs Marine at www.old mercs.com has reprint owners and service manuals for your motor.Sounds like it could be some sort of ignition problem.Might be as simple as a contact in the ignition switch. Try wiggling
the switch to check. It may be making partial contact and after a while it gets hot and quits.
Your dealer isnt much of a dealer if he cant or
wont help you.Three years ago my dealer, at the time he did evinrudes, replaced the impeller in my 1965 Merc.No guestions asked. You may want to try to find a real dealer.
Good luck.
