Where to look for air entering cooling system

Hi,

I'm new to most of this but learning my way around the engine quickly. I'm chasing a cooling problem on a 2001 Glastron with a 3.0l Volvo penta GS with an SX stern drive. I know that i need to install a clear hose to check for bubbles coming out of the impeller, but where does the hose attach to check if it's coming in from the stern drive? If it is coming in the stern drive, what is the likely cause?
