If you can't find a marine machine shop nearby, you may have to ship it to get it done right. Do not use an automotive shop if you want a good job.

I would have to disagree with wilde.
The marine shop you take it to will just take it to a machine shop and have them do it and then charge you extra for doing nothing.
Look in the yellow pages and find some of the machine shops in your area, call your local chamber of commerce and ask them if they have any info on the ones you find, then go and talk to them.
I would look for one that builds race engines for a local track in your area, they are usually the best and have the ability and know how to the job right.
The machine shop where we have our race engines built, also does many engines for old Chris Crafts and other boats other styles of engines.

Go in and talk to the owner and or the guy that will do the machine work. You will be able to tell if he knows what he is talking about. If your comfortable then have them do the work, if not move on.

Re: Where to get Block Bored?

I get my oil changed regularly at a shop that builds race engines and no way would that shop or any other like it would do outboard block boring for me (or anyone else). They have zero experience fitting pistons for two stroke outboards, don't have the proper boring fixtures, do only four stroke engines and are honest enough to decline the business. Just my opinion though.

You're right ... an assumption on my part, since most OMC/BRP engines are two stroke.

I agree completely with Wilde1j and to me it doesn't matter if it's a 2 or 4 stroke. I'd still only use a marine machine shop for an outboard block. While there are many good marine machine shops we still use those that have some affiliation or close relationship with the OEs. Things change and not everyone gets the information. Unfortunately some very good shops across the country have disappeared in the last few years. Some real good ones - Flagship, Mar Fab, OBR and Riverside among others - still remain.

i would think any motorcycle/snowmobile shop would be the place to get an outboard bored out. or they will know where to get it done.

an engine is an engine. some people think marine engines are somehow magical or special.

AND I must disagree with biffleman "The marine shop you take it to will just take it to a machine shop and have them do it and then charge you extra for doing nothing." I know quite a few OUTBOARD machine shops here in the FL.KEYS in fact that do their OWN machine work ,AND wouldnt send their blocks out to insure the work is done to their specs.
Just the facts sir, just the facts

Re: Where to get Block Bored?

As Dhadley points out, the good shops maintain relationships with the engine manufacturer, and are up on service bulletins which sometimes result in machining modifications to the block to deal with running and/or failure issues and are knowledgeable in great detail about the blocks they work on. The good shops don't just bore holes. They will know the acceptable tolerances for forged or cast pistons, etc. If any of you want to chance a crummy job, that's up to you. It won't be my motor.

im in upstate NY. never heard of a "marine" machine shop. just machine shops, and they are hit or miss............

was a mech. in the USCG on the great lakes, never once did buisiness or even heard of a "marine" machine shop.
it might be tough in the north/ not near the ocean.

Re: Where to get Block Bored?

A friend of mine had a piston go in a Merc ..he took it to a machine shop near us..he did motorcycles....he would not do it..he did send us to a guy who does Marine engines...we went there...he was so close to us we never knew it...when we got there talked to the guy...asked why he does not advertise..answer was he is so busy with just dealer work and his own work..any ways he took the job...

Now when he looked at the block he went and got a book from Merc he had..told us what had to be done...he had all the info for doing the job....

thats the difference of having some one with Marine engine experience...

did a great job....gave my buddy a few pointers also..since the guy does remanufactor power heads also...

If you live in the hinterlands, you may have to ship the block. And Al-53 is right,
the good shops have no need to advertise.
