where to find model number on a 9.5 Evinrude

I need to find the year for the motor i found this number on what i think is the head. It is wear the plugs go in. I am very good with chevy v-8s but not very good with boat motors. Any way this is the number on the head 309609.

I'll guess that you found the OMC part number for the head itself, and not the model or serial number of the motor. You'll need to look at the side of the powerhead and look for a small aluminum disc (about the size of a quarter), the model number and serial number are stamped on that disc.
