where to find mercruiser drive gear parts at good price?

i have '74 mercruiser 165, with its outdrive on my kitchen counter. drive gears are self destrucing. (my first) boat is 6 weeks old and i know parts are pricey. any help on where to buy discount parts(especially upper drive gears)would be appreciated. thanks, dave

Look at this pic and get the 18- number. Carry the number to NAPA and they use the same part number.<br /><br /> web page

Try Boatfix.com.. I usually find they have the best prices. I just bought a brand new 14x19p Aluminum prop from them for $94. This is at least $30 less than anybody else. It even beat e-bay..<br /><br />For new parts, it's the way to go..

thanks for all the help guys! i am checking on some of your recommended sites now. so far i have found upper drive gears from NAPA $306. and theshadconnection.com $186.84. i will keep looking and let everyone know who is lowest. thanks again, dave

please help me experienced boaters.[this is '74 galaxy 18' with mercruiser 165] i have failed upper drive gears, that i found decent price to replace.(Itend to buy water pump replacement kit as preventive maintenace. the question is how far to go with rebuild. there is slight wear on vertical drive shaft from water pump, and medium pitting where thrust hub contacts prop shaft. all shaft splines ( as well as u-joints, probibly original) look fine. i would like a boat reliable enough for intercoastal waterway vacation, but we are not dealing with unlimited budget. any advice as to how far to go replacing seals (with no water in lower unit) would be appreciated. as a second question , as a mechanically inclined person , what is the consensus on adjusting the drive lash on drive gears. is this foolish to try as a DIY'er? <br /> advice so far on this site has been invaluable, thanks everyone! hope i can help others as i gain knowledge.
