Re: where to find laundry soap

You can cut your laundry detergent use in half or even more if you follow this. There is so much soap left over in your cloths, that you can wash them in no soap once in awhile and they will be just as clean. Use half the detergent the bottle says, and you will be fine also. Use a bit full strenth on stains before you put in the washer. Dish washing liquid, (Palmolive), is an owsome grease remover, as is shampoo. Whites are about the only thing that will start to dull if not washed with at least some bleach once in awhile.

Buy your laundry detergent from Dollar Stores, don't buy the off brand ones, its a lot less expensive there than at supermarkets or Walmart. ;)

Luckyjim..... I don't see anything wrong with this approach... I'd probably go for liquid, and come up with a dispenser, Did you ever watch the show "Home Improvement"? ole Tim made an automatic detergent dispener... SS Mayfloat might be our man to help fabricate this one :)

I agree w/ lube on the quantity used. I rarely use what is suggested on the box. I also wash almost everything in cold water only. Saves money on electric and slow down the breakdown of the clothes due to washing.

I get mine at Sam's club. Not 55 gallons but larger than what you can buy at Walmart. Comes with a valve that dispenses using gravity on a tall shelf.

Did you ever see that the dispenser in a "tide" carton is about 2.5 times the size of the recommended amount they say you should use?

Also cuts down on sorting mishaps....I am sure I am not the only one who has a few pink shirts that used to be white.

Re: where to find laundry soap

thanks for all the replies, we already do most of what has been suggested but thought that it would still be much cheaper to find it in bulk. we do at least 3 loads a day, every day that's about 1,000 loads a year

I use a detergent called 7th-Generation in a high capacity front load washer. It takes 2 tablespoons per load of this powdered detergent. When I got the front loader the directions I got was to use no detergent the first time around since there would be so much left over in the clothing from the toploader. Detergent irritates the heck out of my skin and the front loader's rinse and the plant based detergent fixed that.

I hope you meant "cut it to a 1/4" HeyC. That's what soft water should do.

Now all the detergent makers use a low or no suds detergent. Makes you think you need more. Try this...Fill washer with water before you put the detergent in, as you pour the detergent in keep your hand in the water notice the diference the soap makes to the feel of the water. When the water texture changes you have plenty soap and can cut back from there by about 30%. you will be amazed.

5 gallon bucket of powdered detergent, $9.
Disolve it in a half gallon of hot water before use to ensure it fully disolves. Then wash in cold water.

Fill the container with hot water and add the soap, let it sit, so it is ready for the next load.

Re: where to find laundry soap

I have to chime in here. This is what I really do now at the prison, I'm a laundry manager. Our soap, called Dejest, is made by the state in another prison unit. It runa about $65 for a 100 pound bag. For 240 pounds of pants/****s/boxers I use a total of 25 ounces. For my small washer whicj holds 75 pounds of clothes it uses about 10 ounces. Thats about the eqiv of 6-7 PACKED baskets only using about a coofee cup size amount of soap. You do have to use a product called sour in the rinse cycle to bring the ph back down to 5.5-7.0 but sour is cheap too. For a normal washing machine you would use about 2 tablespooons of soap, and a pinch of the sour. Since I am a state employee I ould purchase these thru the state at the same rate. Check with those who run your laundry and see what they do and how much it costs. You might be able to do the same things. If I ever get a high cap front loader for home I will be switching over,, no reason not too.
