Where to begin when looking to buy

I finally moved back to New England. And wouldn't-cha know.. we love the water. I actually love saltwater fishing in Long Island Sound on the CT shore, into RI, and the Cape.

But over the next 6 months I will like to purchase a boat (again). Center consoles range greatly. 10K is a 80s something. And then 50K for a 90s Boston Whaler, then 15k for 2005 brand i dont recognize. I'm not asking what to buy. I'm asking if there is a way I can grasp the boat "market" and hobby before owning/ buying one. I wouldn't want to buy one.. then instantly learn what I like and don't like and wish I did this or that...I'm very technical. I suppose another way to look at it is what designs are good, what hardware is bad.. and after what year did things really "get good" .. or "bad".

I go through so many hobbies and "fields" and it's never clear until you are well versed. I hardly know boating too. All new... I owned a 19' 1989 Searay bowrider with the 4.3 inboard. I then owned a 85 22' all aluminum Gregory with a 50hp 2 stroke outboard. But that was in Idaho on lakes. I'm interested in salt water, here in southern New England.

If it matters.. we'll pay cash and ideally...under $25K. We live 20 minutes from the shore. But towing would be rare.

So... how do I learn. Thanks.
