Where should I take my motors temprature?

I'm trying to monitor my 115s temprature because I am not real confident about the cooling system right now. I am getting a pretty good stream out of the teltale but my pressure guage is not registering any pressure. I unplugged the hose to the guage and blew on it and was able to blow between 5 and 10 psi before my ears popped lol so I know the guage is working.

I ran it at various speeds for a while this afternoon and if I check it with a infrared thermometer she seems to stay in the 140s if checked on the heads around the area of the spark plugs. If I check it on the top of the heads she runs in the upper 150s and if I check it further back on the block in the 170s. Is this normal?

Ok I am pretty sure it is the water pressure gauge that is bad. I replaced the water pump impeller and cleaned out the tell tale opening with a piece of wire and I am getting a very strong flow even at idle. The temps seem a little better 140 on the front of the heads taken at all 4 cyls and around 147 at the top of the heads.

The gauge still isn't moving much but it is obvious I have water pressure.
