Where is the Shift Block on Mercury Outboards

I have a 2005 115hp Mercury 4-stroke outboard. I removed the lower unit to replace the water pump impeller. When I try and re-assemble the lower unit I keep hitting something ? inch from closing it up. I assume it?s the shift shaft not aligning properly. I removed the lower unit several times trying to align the shift shaft but I just can?t get it aligned.

The Mercury shop manual says you may need to move the SHIFT BLOCK a little in order to get the shift shaft aligned properly. I have looked everywhere in the manual and cannot find where this shift block is located. Does anyone know where this is located on the engine? I hope it?s not something I have to remove the power head to get to is it?

Thanks

Thanks jimg984

I just got off the phone with the Mercury people and they said exactly the same thing.

You need to move the shift lever just a little bit between neutral and forward gear in order to align the shift shaft.
