Hey guys, i purchased a 97 fourwinns H190 with a 5.7 ltr carb volvo penta and cobra sx drive. I managed to fix fuel guage so far, speedo works, but rpm no go. I doubled checked cables/connections going into dash, all seems fine. Im not sure where the RPM sensor is located on the engine side? I assumed it would be a wire somwhere to spark plug or distributer cap? Am i on the right path??
By any chance would anyone know how much horsepower this engine puts out off the top of their head? Im in australia and i havnt seen another boat here with same engine and part shops dont seem to know much unless your willing to hand them the boat for few hundred an hour :S

The gray wire coming from the coil is for the tach.

The coil is the "sensor" your looking for to make the RPM gauge work.;):)

ahh now im confused. when i read coil, im thinking that is the area of distributer cap? Im not over mechanically minded, but i can service my own car :p i just assumed rpm reading would be taken somewhere connected to spark plugs. My plan was when i get home to located the grey wire n follow it, or take the cap off distributer n look under there. I was just hoping its somwhere i can reach, engine access on boats arnt the greatest, especially being my first I/O setup.

Im not over mechanically minded,

Ayuh,... Not to be Mean, but if you don't know what the Coil is,...
You Really don't belong anywhere near the motor.....

Follow the center hi-tension wire from the Distributer,.....
The Coil is on the Other end of it....

Guys just thought i'd let you know i finally got around to locating that grey wire Don mentioned, out came the multi meter, followed it right into the dash. did voltage tests etc to make sure voltage was varying as i accelerated. That was fine but needle still wasnt moving. Ended up ripping out dash, drilled out pop riverts etc, got to the pcb. Located the IC chip that reads in the voltage and converts it into necessary signals. (googled data sheet for circuity of the chip to know circuit around it), ended up being a faulty 4.7k resistor. Was showing open circuit, no resistance, no voltage was passing through( which is odd, resistors usually dont fail and it didnt look damaged or cooked). Replaced part and everything works fine now.

Thanks guys once again for giving me a starting point (i wouldnt have known where signal came from as i was looking at wrong part of engine). Im no good around engines part names etc, but electronics no problems
