Hi All

PLease see attached pic of a small rubber tube with a s/steel collar on it. Where does this go ( lower leg removed by mechanic for waterpump Force 125 ( 1988)). Also, there is a pic of a small tube next to a 'AA' battery. This was part of the engine as well. Where does this go? Attached are some pics of the old waterpump housing. Looks ok to me, but I got a new one anyways.

Any more information required please let me know- or any other pics, otherwise- comments away!:)

First pic is the collar and rubber seal/collar that ride at the base of the splines on the drive shaft. Second? not sure, that is a tiny tube? Your pump housing looks nasty, but I bet you could clean it up enough to use as a backup? Hope that helps, but Frank will likely explain it better, just give him time to answer its worth the wait :)

The first pix is the rubber and ring that fits over the end of the main shaft to stop water getting in to the spline.
Second pix is a AA. battery...(smartass)
next is a water pump housing that looks a bit sad..

Cheers

Slide the steel collar on the drive shaft flat side down..flip the rubber piece upside down opposite as the first picture posted as it fits in the collar. Make sure you lube up the splines with grease when you put it back together to prevent it from seizing together. Not sure about the hose. I have my lower out in the shed...just painted it this weekend... ill take a pic of how it should be.

One more thing...since your water jacket was so bad and your impeller housing is in horrible shape it would be a good idea to check your bypass valve and your head cover/cooling jacket for sand and corrosion and triple check your thermostat by pouring boiling water on it to see if it opens. You can reuse the head gasket but you'll need to reseal the head cover with sealant if you decide to go this route.

That small hose sure looks like a piece of speedometer tubing but your engine did not have an impact hole in the lower unit. So, that hose does not belong anywhere. How did it get into the engine leg? Who knows. was the engine block ever removed? That tubing also looks like the
oil recirculation tubing. If the block was removed from the leg, a piece could have dropped down into the leg and came to rest on the lower unit/.

Your water pump has seen better days and it is time to replace it. It will pump at high speeds because the impeller goes centrifugal and doesn't touch the walls but will not be efficient at low speeds. Install the new one and throw away the old--It is not worth keeping as a spare.

The condition of the pump and the old pics of the water jacket says the relief valve is NOT gonna come out easy.
The first thing the 2 tiny screws that hold it in are gonna snap. Then he's gonna destroy the spring and valve cause they've been stuck for years and won't come easy.
It's an excessive pressure relief and not really necessary.I wouldn't touch it.
That motor didn't have an oil system.
I saw a repair on a pump housing. The guy used Marine Tex,filled the holes and sanded them smooth. It worked. It's a $20 temporary fix.Buy a new one.
The little piece of tube looks like shrink tubing(maybe).
The previous owner must have let the motor set after using.NEVER flushed.
My 1988/85's never looked that bad and they have been ran in salt water since new.J

Where exactly is the bypass valve, how do you get to it, and what does it do? How do you know if it is working properly?

25.jpg#'s 92-96 is the relief valve. When the motor is running past an idle.It pumps way more water than the motor can use.The valve releases and diverts the excess water out the holes in the back of the motor. It's located on the bottom of the head at the lower end of the exhaust jacket.
No idea how to tell if it's not working right other than it might overheat if EVERYTHING is clogged.J
