Where do you Like to Hook your Minnows.

I am interested in seeing where guys like to hook thier minnows.I am a through the eyes kind of guy while slip bobbering for crappies,how about you?

When fishing with bait for trout/salmon I always hook the bait fish through the lips. For larger fish like bass/stripers I hook bait fish through the back by the dorsal fins. Just habit I guess.

Depends on how I'm fishing. When slow trolling for crappie I hook them thru the lips from the bottom up. They will live longer that way. If dipping in brush or sitting still I usually hook them thru the back so they can swimm around some.

I like to troll 6 inch live minnows when I go out for lakers.I hook them through the jaw with a small single hook and connected to that, a stinger hook that goes through the meat just above the anal fins. The small hook "tows" the minnow while the larger one has the task of hooking the target fish.

Preferably, into the upper lip of a much larger fish.

Generally, I only use small minnows to tip jigs for walleyes. Keeping them alive is not a concern. Through the head or eye sockets to have the best chance of keeping the minnow on minor snags.

I forgot about the trolling of bait. I use a slip/quick strike rig, tandom hookset. I hook the front hook through the lips/head area and the trailer hook towards the tail. I shorten the rig so that the bait does a big slow spin while trolling for salmon and lake trout.

If fishing on the bottom with slip sinker I want the minnow tail hooked so he keeps trying to swim up, if you lip hook he'l go down in the mud or rocks, for crappies when they're feeding it really don't matter much where you hook em. I've caught crappie on cigarette butts.

When troling I like to hook it through the lips with a stinger hook.

If I still fish I will hook the minnow between the dorsal fin and the lateral line. Paying attention not to touch the spinal cord. They stay alive longer...

i use a sewing hook and sow the fish on it works better then a needle

For crappies using a bobber I always hooked them through the lips. On a still lake I could see them swimming around as the bobber would make little tiny rings. then it would go flat and BOOM.

Anyway that's what worked for me.

Thru the eyes? you barbaric monster We have to send the Mesa PETA Chapter after you. Pamela Anderson will camp out on your front yard until you stop hooking your minner thru the eyes.

Question for you guys that use minnow bait, what do you do with the left over baits? I've heard they're a PITA to keep alive.

I've got a pike minnow that was leftover from last fall still swimming around in my 60 gallon fish tank

He's doing well, I might use him for bait in a few weeks once my Starcraft is ready to fish

For walleyes on a jig, in the mouth, out the gill, then the point turned around and inserted back into the belly.

I like to hookem throught the upper lip and then out the nostril. If you do it right a barbed hook will never come out and the hook is in a good position for strikes on most fish.

you need to avoid the tiny brain as they will instantly die. takes some practice but they live for a long time and can be very active.

also when you cast it wont tare thier jaw off after several long casts.

I say if you catch'm then stick with what works for you. I keep minnows in a 15gal tank with a filter. Minnows die easy but if you have an established tank and every other day skim off the one or two that die you can keepm for months. YOu must remove the dead minnows or the rest will die. feedm regualr fish food and instant live bait when the LBS is out

Well, If I had my way, I make a small slit just through the skin the length of my long shank hook. One at the eye and one at the bend. Then I slide the hook shaft between the meat and skin. Should be beside dorsal fin. The hook lies flat with the barb up. run the line through the gill and tie to hook. That minnow will last forever, unless some large fish figures it's lunch.

I switch up. Sometimes I will be catching No Fish. And simply by switching from the mouth to the tail (or vice-versa) will start producing fish.?
Some folks will fee dthe hook thru the gills and out the mouth. Allows the minnow to live a long time but Sometimes they will just Swim off the hook.. But Try different ways If your not catching fish Switch up !
