Where do old boat molds go?

Reading tons of comments and questions on all these forums, I see so many boating manufactures that open up and make/mold boats for a few years and then close and sell out to somebody else that starts out their boating company. But eventually what happens to their molds that they made to build their boats? So many boats with totally different names look very close to each other. But does anybody know what really happens to the molds after a company closes out. How long can the molds be used before they are not worthy of producing quality boats anymore? Some are built using chopper-guns spraying in the resin and chopped glass while others are hand laid and finished... Any ideas?

I have seen them for sale on occasion. Sadly some are neglected and just die. :(

There was a local bass boat manufacturer who made some pretty good boats from what I've heard. Mood Craft was their name. When the owner died they simply closed up shop. If you go by there old place there are two of the old molds sitting out back. I don't know if all their molds ended up this way, but I hope not. There are several of their boats around, and the people who own them say they are good and stable. A little rough in rough water, but good fishing boats.

Interesting tnstratofam. I was wonder about the actual molds seeing so many boat building companies open up made boats for a few years or even a decade and then close up . Those old forms/molds have to go somewhere. And I like to know how they're made and who makes them. I was also wondering how many times the form/molds could be used before the copies start looking suspect. I remember back some years ago that Mr. Forrest Wood of Ranger boats use to show their boat making process in their commercials. But it was little short clips and not the entire process. Things like that interest me...

nwcove that was a good one...and I also see that it isn't "mold" like I was typing but "mould" like you typed. Thanks for pointing that out. Between spelling and incorrect word usage, I'm surprised anybody can make much sense out of my comments...
