Re: Where do I spray starting fluid?

What motor is this?

If it's a 2 cycle, where you mix the oil with gas, you "can" give it a little shot of starting fluid, but it's not great for it, because it doesn't get any lubrication if it doesn't have fuel mix right behind your starting fluid.

Can you describe your issue a bit more?

If you've got good spark, and it's getting adequate fuel to the carb, there's generally no need for starting fluid. I'd do a little more looking before trying to get it running on starting fluid.

Otherwise, if you insist ;) you can spray right into the carb(s)- but only for a second or two (it's not great for your engine). OR, you can shoot a little bit right into the cylinder(s) by removing the spark plug(s), and then, of course, quickly putting it/them back in (starter fluid evaps pretty quickly).

What engine?

Don't use starting fluid, no lube in the fuel. Instead get a little spray/spritz bottle, fill it with the correct oil:fuel mix from your gas can/tank and spray it directly in the carb throat. You'll have to keep feeding it gas if it's not getting any.

NO STARTING FLUID - PERIOD !!!!!!!! As tmcalavy mentioned there's no oil in it - it will wash any residual oil away from your cylinder walls and now you have metal on metal. Besides, the bang it makes is a lot more powerful than your fuel/oil mix. Good way to break something.

Starting fluid is also known as "head removal in a can". I worked in a shop that had (had) an incompetent mechanic that would use ether any time an engine didn't start. He broke piston compression rings in at least two engines using that crap. The fact is it will ignite at the wrong position of the piston stroke, and its burn rate is much faster than gasoline. When this ether explodes way before the piston is supposed to get its peak pressure it back drives the crank the wrong direction. Yes--gasoline does have a burn rate. The only time you should use it is when it a "metered" like some diesel engines set ups have. Otherwise if a gasoline fueled engine does not start on its gasoline there is something wrong. Ether is not the fix.
