2. can you tell what the size the mercruiser engine is, from the pictures or the year and make other than a V8. Small block or big block GM or Ford? Etc.... Any info you could pass on to me would be awesome....

Just answered my own question...In case any one else needed help!
Locating MerCruiser Serial Number Tags

Engine Serial Number: The serial number tag is located near the starter, by the flywheel housing; or, on the rocker arm or flame arrestor cover.

Transom plates: The serial number tag is located on the inner transon plate inside the boat; or, on the upper swivel pin.

Sterndrive Serial Number (separate from engine): The serial number tag is located on the upper drive shaft housing (starboard side or on the back of the housing).

It`s a small block GM 305/350 family 220-260hp, fresh water cooled, with the 2 barrel carb I`d say 220hp
SEI 106 outdrive ,a direct replacement for mercruiser

Sometimes thess erial numbesr are in the most likely or the most unusual places. On my 2000 Mercruiser 5.0 with a Bravo III, the engine serial number is both on the starter area and the flme arrestor cover. The transom number is also on the flame arrestor cover. Interestingly, the outdrive number is only partially given on the flame arrestor cover. The outdrive number was also on the right-hand side decal on the outdrive, but that was scratched off from years of handling. It was when I removed the outdrive decals to paint the drive and replace the decals that I found the outdrive serial number stamped into the side of the drive! It had been completely covered by the decal. Nowhere in the Mercruiser manual does it indicate that the drive number is carved anywhere on the drive; it only indicates the number's location on the decal. Hunt and you will find. Hy

Hey thanks for the info....When you say fresh water cooled...um..I see/have a tank on top holding green fluid..does this unit not allow any fresh water into the engine? See picture...Thanks again

Also, you state that it is a direct replacement for mercruiser...Do you mean the engine was replaced or it is the orginal engine used by Merc. made by GM?

Thaks so much...there are some numbers on the arrestor...I have not found any on the engine yet...still crawling around..looking.

I think I need a new starter....as she only clicks...Will I be able to get the right starter with out the serial #? By taking the old one in and having it matched up?

Nope, these are not going to be your serial numbers, Normally The serial number will start off with something like 0f, 0B, 0D, 0M, 0L, ect, Then there will be six numbers after it. The older serial numbers will have just 7 numbers.

Every Mercruiser engine serial number is stamped into a small metal plate and pinned to the side of the engine block. This plate is about 1" wide X 2" tall and it is usually pinned to the stb side of the block towards the rear.

Part number 805016 is a ARRESTOR, FLAME.
Part number 807988C is a C.I. EXH.ELBOW W/SNOUT & BODE.
