When the Geese Fly?

This was in our daily fishing report in the Daily News this morning. I'd never heard of this before, but its all eyes to the skies for me from now on.

In my earlier days of fishing, about age 11, I was fishing on a private pier in Clear Lake at the same time an elderly gentleman was crabbing. The fish were not biting and I was bemoaning that fact when he pointed up in the sky to a flock of geese flying over.

“See that,” he said.

“Yes,” I replied.

“Know what that means to old salts like me?”

“No,” I answered.

“That is the first flight of geese I’ve seen this season,” he said, “and it means good flounder fishing.”

For close to 50 years, I still recall that conversation. Let’s look for the first flight of geese this weekend!
