Okay this might be a dumb question but im going to ask anyway. My 1986 Mercruiser 5.7 is out of boat and on a pallet, I finally have it running and no water in oil, but my question is when running on a pallet can I just stick a water hose in the end of the same hose where the impeller comes in or do I need to put a really tight clamp on it. I noticed that by just putting the hose in, I didnt get the kind of water flow that I wanted but when I squeezed the hose and held it tight it started exhausting old rusty looking water, then stopped. Does it need to be a good tight fit?

Depends on how long your going to run it. If less the 2 to 3 minutes no issue. If your going to run it much longer things will get hot that do not have much water in it like the heads. So best to put as much as possible just to be safe

IMO

So does the water pump need a really tight fir to pump or can I just shove the water hose in the thermostat housing?

put a hose on the T housing inlet and clamp the garden hose to the other end. If you running it with a engine mounted raw water pump, do the c=same , insert a hose and clamp it

If you mean the circulating water pump, then this pump only circulates water in the motor to keep it moving. It is not able to suck water from a hose, it only moves what the hose or the drive pumps makes available

Ayuh,..... You should firmly attach yer garden hose to the barb on the t-stat housin' that the impeller feeds,....

Turn the water On, 'n the motor will fill up,til the water runs out the exhaust risers,....

Then start it up,....

Can I flush out the risers by running water from t-stat housing toward the risers, I saw a lot of rust colored water coming out of there?

I wouldn't worry too much about rust-colored water. You can do the same "flushing" by just dropping it back in the boat and running it. Likely you'd see that same rusty water every time you started it up in the water if you could see it, so long as it has sat dry for a day or more.
