When is it time to replace my outboard?

I have a 1994 Evinrude Ocean Pro 225. The compression in all cylinders is 75lbs. I don't know how far along it is in its life. I have alot of trouble starting it when cold, seems to flood out easily and then I have to clear the cylinders. Any opinions on life expectancy and engine starting problem? This engine is obviously carburated.

75 PSI compression is low which accounts for the hard starting. Before dumping or rebuilding the engine, try decarbing it using SeaFoam. Carbon build-up can be reduced and stuck rings can be freed up using this process. Lots of info on the process on these forums. Do a search for "decarb process"

That engine is not that old. If the Seafoam doesn't bring it back a rebuild is still a lot cheaper than a new one.

Isn't that fairly normal compression for that era V-6? I mean all variables considered.

Just my 2 cents!

How many hours on that motor? what kind of oil do you us? How long have you had the motor? Is it second hand? Do you run it a lot?

Saltwater or fresh?

That would help people dignose your motor better.

I just bought this boat with the motor included. There is no hour gauge. The oil used has been Evinrude 2 stroke. I am the third owner and use it only in freshwater and have put maybe 15 hrs on it. The previous 2 owners had used it in salt water. The second owner, who I bought it from, told me after having it for 2 years had put appr 20 hrs on it.

Like silver tip said decarbing it using SeaFoam. sounds like sticking rings. Also when was the last time the carbs were rebuild? Since you have had it that long lots of siting time could have developed deposits in your carbs?

Just my 2 cents again.

Carbs have probably never been rebuilt.

How are you starting that motor? I had the same problem with mine until I got tthe hang of teh strat-up procedure. there is a very fine line between prime and flood and you've found out. Mine works well if I push the primer and tuen the key at the same time.

The other thing you may want to look at is the prime circuit. I rebuilt the prime solenoid, cleaned all the check valves at the carb and replaced all the lines and have been good to go ever since.

75 pounds across the board is ok, my tester usually shows about 80 psi but mine ,most likly like yours, is not certified by any test lab.
thats why we dont have specific numbers .

if your concerened about cylinder sealing it takes 30 min or so to do a cylinder leak down test on that engine. less than 12% leakage and its fine and will be time to chase the hard start issue.
your engine is equipped with the quick start feature and may have a malfunction of the feature or simply a fuel issue.
